I’ve been there myself. I’ve struggled with these same issues. And for the past 30 years, I’ve studied, tested, tried, made mistakes and learned the hard way to make my recordings top-notch. Now, I can give you the benefit of my decades of experience and teach you the same techniques that I use in the studio every day.
In this intensive program, I walk you step-by-step through specific pro recording techniques and secrets that you can use immediately in your own studio and music productions.
Who Am I?
You may or may not have heard of me. I go by just one name: Fett. I’m an independent producer/engineer with more than 30 years of experience in the music industry. I’m also the co-founder of Azalea Music Group and the owner of Azalea Studios in Nashville, TN, where I’ve produced, recorded, mixed and/or mastered hundreds of demos and albums for clients all over the world, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, the U.K., and of course the U.S. I’ve worked with guitar virtuosos Tommy Emmanuel and Muriel Anderson, legendary pop star Davy Jones of The Monkees, and award-winning songwriters Don Henry and Jill Colucci among others. But I’ve also worked with countless aspiring artists, helping them bring their musical visions to life.
For seven years, I was also the Technology Editor for the prestigious Performing Songwriter magazine. You may have read some of my articles and/or reviews. It was during this time that I learned a LOT about all kinds of gear, as it was my job to use it, review it, test it, break it and generally know everything there was to know about all kinds of gear.
Now, I occasionally use my expertise to write as a contributing technology author for the Country Music Association’s CMA Close Up magazine, Keyboard magazine and Drum! magazine.
I am the author of the book Fett’s Mixing Roadmap: A Step-by-Step Guide To Mixing Music In The Studio. And I am an RHI-certified Life Coach specializing in music industry and music production careers.
How This Program Came About
I’ve been teaching songwriters, musicians, engineers and producers about music production for more than twenty years. I’ve taught at the TAXI Road Rally (twelve years in a row!), SongU.com, the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), SAE Institute, Belmont University and numerous other events and organizations. I’ve produced audio series, DVDs, articles and books on many different music production topics. I’ve conducted countless hours of one-on-one consultations with home studio and project studio owners. But in many cases, my students and consulting clients have wanted to go into even more depth than the various teaching platforms could provide.
As a result, I came up with this 6-week intensive program on recording fundamentals, in which we can really go into as much depth as the subject matter requires.
In this program, I walk you through the recording process from start to finish. And to keep us on task and ensure that all topics are covered to a sufficient level of detail, this program focuses ONLY on recording techniques – not mixing or mastering (those are covered in separate in-depth programs). With this approach, I can ensure that every participant will get a full, detailed appreciation for all of the subject matter at hand.
This program is not about fluff or skimming over the top level. From the very first module, we roll up our sleeves and dig in with both hands, through a combination of video, audio, printed materials and live phone calls. And in addition to providing you with real, instantly-useable recording techniques and pro secrets, I can also ensure you that this program:
- Is NOT a re-hash of user manuals for gear
- Is NOT a surface-level skim of recording topics
- Is NOT only applicable to one set of gear or setup
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, or use Pro Tools, SONAR, Audition, Logic, GarageBand, Cubase, Nuendo, MixCraft, Studio One or a traditional console and outboard gear, you will be able to use ALL of the techniques taught in this program in YOUR studio and on YOUR gear.
[content_box_light_green width=”75%”]Here’s just some of what you’ll learn in this program:
[green_tick_1_list width=”100%”]- Key insights about microphones – their design, features, and strengths and weaknesses, and how to use the different types most effectively.
How mic placement and positioning can make dramatic improvements in your recordings, and save you valuable time later in mixing and mastering.
- How to avoid and/or take advantage of phase cancellation, off-axis rejection and proximity effect.
- Why recording with multiple microphones is almost always better than recording with one, and how to make multiple microphones work together to get the most out of each instrument and voice.
- Secrets of proper level-setting and gain staging, and why they’re so important to full, high-quality sound.
Specific settings for recording vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and more.
- Specific recommendations on gear based on real-world use by a pro – not just what you read in marketing literature and product reviews.
But don’t take my word for it…Listen to what some of my clients have to say about me and the information I provide…
[features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your seminars and book. I learned enough in the recording class alone to make the entire trip [to the convention] worthwhile. In fact, I took some of the knowledge, went to my room, remixed a track through my laptop speakers and improved the quality considerably.”— Richard B [/features_box_yellow] [features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”Your classes were amazing. I think the density and intensity may have scared some of the less alert students. I assure you that I walked out pleased with how much I already knew, shocked at how much I had just learned, and motivated to run home and get started! The enthusiasm, professionalism and down-to-earth friendliness you brought to the classroom was inspiring. I self-record and have had some issues warming up to the microphone. [Your suggestions] helped immensely.”
— Matt B [/features_box_yellow] [features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”Hi Fett, I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your help mentoring at the TAXI Road Rally as well as in Nashville with NSAI. Without your help teaching me (and others) how to get decent sounding recordings on a budget, I never would have been able to have any of my songs heard by professionals. I’m still working hard to achieve “broadcast quality” and reading all I can to learn, but I have to say that your CDs and your advice has helped me so much to make my music come to life. I write a lot and have been singing all my life, but thanks to cool people like you I’m starting to see my songwriter dreams become a reality. Thanks again my expert, teacher, and new friend.”
— Dennis N [/features_box_yellow] [features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”I learned an incredible amount of obscure knowledge not available anywhere else about mixing and mastering my own music. Thanks for your information about reverb and mixing, I used it in a mix today and loved the results.”
— Jim F [/features_box_yellow] [features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”Just wanted to thank you again for the one-on-one consulting session. The first hour on the phone with you last year made such a difference in my music because I would check my notes from the conversation before writing. And, this time, wow, all sorts of great new information to improve my music. Really enjoyed it.”
— Laura M [/features_box_yellow] [features_box_yellow width=”75%” + border=”2px”]”You were a standout at the event for me. It was great meeting you. Let’s keep in touch and see if we can work together over the years. I’ll support whatever you do.”
